Steve Burns was fantastic last weekend at the Green Door. Photos are available here. He played with the Starlight Mints, a Norman band that has been gaining popularity lately. More updates later...

I haven't been very good about updating this weblog. Apparently people are still looking at it, but mostly because I pop up under various search queries. I'll try to be better about posting here. And if you're looking for information on

Steve Burns or

Songs for Dust Mites

please visit his site:

http://www.steveswebpage.com/

And if you don't know what I'm talking about, visit his site anyway. He makes good music. Thanks!

"Washington, Houston has a problem" Article regarding Bush tax cuts in 2001. Excerpt: Unlike most of the federal government, NASA's budget, as proposed by Bush, falls behind the pace of inflation and results in about a $300 million cut and sets in motion a series of program cuts that will cripple the station currently under construction in space.

Steve Burns visits the Flaming Lips Compound in Oklahoma City

Horoscope for July - July will be a low-key month. Plan to kick back with a cup of iced tea, treat yourself to a good book, and spend some time writing in your journal. Let your social scene sit for now.
Good. I didn't have much going on this month anyhow.

Horoscope for June - An eclipse in your house of friendship on June 10 will bring both beginnings and endings to your social circle. Expect at least one tearful good-bye and, at the same time, an introduction to a new friend destined to enter your sphere. All this will make you acutely aware of the passage of time. Accept these changes as part of the natural rhythm of life. You seem to be on the brink of a new phase, one that is far better than the one you've been through.

A fabulous interview with Steve Burns via Hip Mama. Steve Burns, superstar of hit Nickelodeon show Blue's Clues, is now a rock godlet. He has his own website, and is currently working with various parts of The Flaming Lips on an album called Songs for Dust Mites. Just don't ask him about the Lobsters.

Dolus Index:

  • Number of Days Since Graduation - 353
  • Number of Jobs - 4

I lost the weblog for a short period of time. Everything seems okay now, but I had to rebuild all the templates from scratch and fuzzy memory. Please let me know if you see anything funny.

    New Spring Changes:

    • Goodbye Java - Hello C

    • Economics: a social science concerned chiefly with description and analysis of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services

    • Temporary webmaster position turning permanent

    This semester should go well.

The oppressive heat finally relinquished its deadly grip on Oklahoma. It's almost Halloween. I love the dark holiday. Lights and decorations are already up. Soren is going to be a princess ghost, combining the world of gloom with the world of glam. Her birthday was a big hit.

Classes are going well. I've hit a bit of a learning curve in Java Programming, having no programming under my belt whatsoever. Luckily, mine is not the only blank face in attendance. Perhaps there will be a grade curve...

Career life is good as well. I have acquired a second part-time position, also here at the university. This one is solely a webmaster position, and will ideally lead to many fruitful opportunities in the future.

All else good or at least endurable. I will attempt to modify my weblog-updating frequency.

Loyal friends and admirers, thanks for not leaving this space permanently. Life keeps turning, and I keep floating along with it.

Classes start this coming Monday. I've been admitted to the MS in MIS program here at OU. I have six hours of MIS including Java programming this semester. I'm looking forward to being in school again, which is odd. I was so happy to be done. But this is a great opportunity and I'm glad I talked myself into it.

The job prospects are looking up a bit. There may be something happening with OU, and I received an interview offer from Farmers Insurance a couple of days ago.

Soren starts a new preschool on Monday. She's excited but a little sad that she won't get to see her old friends very much. Birthday countdown is 22 days - she will be 3. I have almost bought out every store's supply of Powerpuff Girls paraphernalia. See her site for details.

    And so on.

Work - relaxed, loud child - visiting grandparents, house - quiet and slowly gaining some semblance of order.

Last book read: Bridget Jones' Diary - Good. Looking forward to - Conjunto Clave live tomorrow night. Mmmmm. Jazz and good times.

Well, everything is settling down quite nicely. I graduated from OU with a degree in "Letters", which simply means that I can read and communicate fairly well. Soren, Amy and I moved into a beautiful house .8 miles from the old one. We had a great time painting it and fixing it up the week before the move. Photo

The job problem has not resolved itself, unfortunately. I'm thinking about going into business for myself, so if anyone needs any web design work done in the next few weeks, please contact me. I'm running a summer special of $5,000 an hour, so you better call quick!

Thanks to everyone for being patient with me. Please forgive me for my inability to update this site more frequently.

    ...Life calming...Things settling down...

We have a house now, just .8 miles from the current house. Moving on May 26th. Job possibility but waiting. More to come...

Another old friend popped into my life recently. We had a lightning fast catch-up-on-our-lives conversation via ma bell, during which she succinctly reminded me that yes, in fact, life could be worse. That, and I saw Schindler's List for the first time last night. Yes, life could be much, much worse. And don't watch Dancer in the Dark. Just say NO.

....And the job situation may be shaping up soon. Message to any potential employers who happen to be reading this: My life is really going swell, seriously. I am a happy and stable person. I just make this stuff up. Promise. Please don't scroll down. Quickly visit my résumé instead. Thank you.

    Wednesday, April 11, 2001

I got a message from an old friend recently - a high school confidante, a love-you-till-we-both-die sort of girl. It brought back a lot of memories, some funny, some painful. Perhaps we can work through some of the bad bits and get back to the happy ones.

It has also reminded me of the proverbial angst that we all seemed to feel back then. I have been particularly struck by the similarities between the primary characteristics of adolescence and the diagnostic criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder. This disorder includes some of the following symptoms:

    • frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.

    • a pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships

    • identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self

    • impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating)

    • recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior

    • chronic feelings of emptiness

    • inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger

Well, that about sums up my problems from age 14 to 17. ;) It's mostly difficult to remember how my thought processes worked back then. I had some odd rationalizations for behavior, for example. Hmmm, might be nice to have some of those old skills back...

The King of Carrot Flowers - Part One
         by Neutral Milk Hotel

    When you were young
You were the king of carrot flowers
And how you built a tower tumbling through the trees
In holy rattlesnakes that fell all around your feet

And your mom would stick a fork right into daddy's shoulder
And your dad would throw the garbage all across the floor
As we would lay and learn what each other's bodies were for

    And this is the room
One afternoon I knew I could love you
And from above you how I sank into your soul
Into that secret place where no one dares to go

And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking
And dad would dream of all the different ways to die
Each one a little more than he could dare to try

If you haven't heard them yet, you should. If you need mp3 samples, e-mail me. Or try Amazon here.

All right, so it wasn't a very long break. Anyone not currently having a serious crisis, please e-mail me or respond to this entry and tell me a long winding story about how calm and normal your life is. I could really use a good example of a sane and comfortable life to vicariously live through right now. Thanks.

The new dolus is now officially up and running with Greymatter. I like it. Go get it here if you want. Perhaps THIS will motivate me to post more often.

If you miss the old bloggerized dolus, you can reach it and its archives in the menu to your left. The big "dolus -i, m." image at the top of this window will always bring you back to dolus Prime.

The anti-smoking campaign has been thus far successful. If I can make it through the next 8 weeks or so without starting up again and/or killing someone, then I will have conquered the evil things.
